Conservation easements are a way to preserve land in perpetuity. In this preservation, Dan will describe how they work, the criteria they must fulfill, and show local examples. He will illustrate how the owners of working lands (farms, ranches, etc.) might benefit from putting a conservation easement in place.

Dan is the Vice-President of Land & Watershed Programs for The Conservation Foundation. Celebrating his 21^st year with the organization, Dan is the Foundation’s chief land preservation person and is also responsible for the Green Earth Harvest organic farm program. Dan has worked closely with public agencies and private landowners to directly preserve more than 5,300 acres of land, worth more than $111 million, using a variety of tools, ranging from conservation easements to outright acquisition.

The Green Earth Harvest program is centered on the Foundation’s McDonald Farm, a 60-acre organic vegetable farm at the south end of Naperville. It serves 650 families in a community-supported agriculture program as well as providing fresh, organic vegetables to 6 food pantries in DuPage and Will Counties.
